Hafele vs Hettich

All views expressed here are personal and are written after I have personally used these products and bought them. I will try to make the blog as simple as possible. The products were purchased by me in India and used in Bangalore.

Hafele vs Hettich:

Well these both are leading companies in hardware fittings and are on premium side. I considered them while I wanted to buy them for my house interiors and had a detail study on them before I selected one of them. When I visited the dedicated stores of both these companies I found out that hafele outnumbered Hettich in the number of products it offered. Also hafele had more options in the Kitchen category with its brand (Blum) than hettich.

Blum being a part of Hettich offered premium solution for Kitchen accessories and is a very good option to consider if you are looking for a premium long sustaining products as it provides the quality justifying its price. We can experience when we install a basic soft close channel of Hettich Hafele and Blum. Blum is more premium and gives a good feel followed by Hafele and then Hettich.

I preferred Hafele + Blum over Hettich due to its higher number of solution it can offer to customer and the quality of product. For the wardrobes telescopic Channels I bought Hafele, and for my Kitchen I used Blum, as it gives more longer life and can sustain more weight as kitchen being a place where we open and shut the drawers a number of times in a day.

For the wardrobe I used the hafele channels and wheel kit which I feel is much better than many other brands available in India. Initially I felt I was paying a lot of amount compared to its near competitors (at some point the difference is 5times) but if you need to fit and forget Hafele is very good option.

It’s a onetime investment rather than expense. The wheel are very smooth and doesn’t sound much, I also attached a soft close with it which protects the door from banging and also added a switch with a scale light, so whenever I opened the wardrobe the lights would switch on and off when I closed them. I would upload the pictures pretty soon.

Blum on the other hand I used in my kitchen fitting and must say though it being costly it is worth it. It adds the premium touch to your kitchen and you can feel it in your daily use. I went with the steel finish set they have, other two one being plastic and powder coated, but the SS gives a very good finish and looks very neat. I also used Blum auto hinges for small doors and they are very good in quality too.

One of the fitting I used of Hettich was the franke fittings, which hafele doesn’t produce. This is used for Sofa cum Bed fitting by which we can make a sofa convert to bed, I must say this was a very impressive product developed by hettich and was only available with it and few other Chinese brands. But the quality of Hettich was very high and premium.

One important thing with hardware fittings is that though it may not add to the overall look of things, it may also go unnoticed amongst your guest but it would be preferable if you go for good brands. This is a prime base on which many of your products are running. You will have less trouble if they are of good quality as they will give good life in long run. A good brand of fitting if fitted right will avoid you to call the carpenter often. Also hafele had a very good customer response system, as many of the fitting are complicated and if not fitted right may not function as desired. They has a good support team who assists and guides the carpenter free of cost in case needed.

  1. Hi, congratulations on the successful completion of your home interior work. Can you share the details of the place from where you bought Blum fittings? What best percentage discount can be availed on these items.
I am also preferring hafale over hettich.
    Thanks

    1. Yes Sir I did use Ebco products but at selected places, no doubt they are of good quality and competitive priced. But i experienced the difference between ebco and hafele in the wardrobe channels and wheel set. Ebco makes some irritating sound and are not as smooth as Hafele. Hafele has a wide range of products too, which gives innovative solution to basic problems.

  5. any idea regarding Hafel tendem box? or if you also had done research on this ? pls share some information....which is better SS basket or Tendem box?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tandem box are very good, I am personally using them but of Blum, as they can sustain higher weight and more numbers of open and shut. I feel if you want a more modern look and can spend more you can go for the Tadem box (They are costly but looks stylish) and if you want a basic kitchen you can select SS basket.

    2. Manish once use hettich arcitech series of drawers u will forget everything.
Blum's chennal is as same as chinease chennals but hettich has a defined technology.
And if i talk about telescopic chennals then there is no product better than hettich telescopic chennals they are masters
Hafale is a trading co. They are just trading cheap chinese products else then blum. Whereas hettich is a manufacturer co.
Worlds biggest nd best kitchen maker ikea kitchens is using only hettich drawers. Not blum

From whom did you get all this fitted. Did you hire a designer or carpenter. Can you please share the contact. based on what I read the person fitting it should have experience else may not fit it well.

    1. Hello Shivali,
I had hired a local carpenter from Mumbai who was very experienced, though he fitted these fitting for the first time, not even a single fitting was damaged. Local assistance from the hafele store and a carpenter with good brain can do these fitting. The person I hired was Mr. Jagadish +91=9819143336). If one follows the instruction given with the fitting its a easy game.

Thank you so much for sharing your views.
Im an architect and about to do my new house. I was little confused for the fitting, but your article channelized my thoughts.
1 Question, Did you opt for modular kitchen? or just Hafele hardware? Approx what did it cost you for the entire kitchen.

    Thank you.

    Replies
    1. Hi,
I didn't opt for any specialized service provider for modular kitchen but in turn got all the fitting myself and got it fitted by the carpenter. The finishing and look is equivalent to top modular kitchen providers, but at a significant lower cost. Its very difficult to break down the cost, but it way lower than one we get it done from so called specialist

Laminates and other hardware was purchased by me from Mumbai, Grant road few shops of whose name I remember was of Lamart, Suveneer, Nero Hardware, Uttam glass. We can get awesome stuff at very good price.

  14. Nice blog.
    I have 2 questions-
    1. Would you recommend backpainted glass for shutters in kitchen. How much would it cost per sqft?
    2. Using proper solid wood for entire kitchen will be worth?(pros and cons)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi,
Back painted glass do look good and are in trend today. I did not prefer it because kitchen being a high footfall region of the house the risk of it getting damaged increases. After all it is glass and we open and close shutters draws numerous number of times in a day any object hitting them would damage the glass and cost of replacement for such small piece also increases. This is the reason I did not go for them.

Your second question if I am not mistaken by solid wood you mean to say Teak wood. Yes one can go for it if you are a fan of it, but given the cost of Teak these days very few people go for it. It is very costly and also working on it takes lot of time hence carpenter charges high for the same.

A good strong ply with modern laminates (upon our budget) gives a better look at economical price and lesser time.

And we can change the laminate anytime in future with ease.

      Thank You.

    1. Hello apologies for delay in reply. I think it should fit because local made steel baskets also runs on telescopic channels so you can use Hafele/Hettich Telescopic channel. Just make sure you use the correct weight capacity channels.

    1. Hi, Yes I did not go with the same rule of thumb for wardrobe interior, instead used different design for different based on requirements. By this we optimally use the space and end up wasting very minimal, as the requirements are unique and different for kids, ladies and gents. If you can share me your mail id I shall send you images of the same, you can have a look. If we hire any Carpenter or designer make sure they know well in advance what your requirements are. It will take time for them to work on different design and may charge a bit extra compared to standard designs, but it will be worth it.

Please guide which is good & reasonably priced brand in basket & fitting.
One query the carpenter was in Mumbai and he travelled to Bangalore for your work ??

    1. Hi, yes the carpenter traveled from Mumbai to Bangalore. Yes mam Hafele fittings are very costly compared to other Indian brands, but we can feel the difference I can say. If you have budget then do not compromise on quality.

Also please ask for good discounts, the retailers will give you a great deal. If you go for hafele or hettich then you do not require baskets. Otherwise for basket any local brand store will customize and give it to you, depends on the finishing a gauge of steel used, no specific brands in this field as per my knowledge goes on brand value of store keeper.

    1. Hello,
I used Invito, as I found it to be more sustaining and stylish compared to other two also it is made up of SS so the life would be longer compared to other two. I had a 3 feet draw and loaded this with a 65kg capacity blum fitting and must say you I am pretty impressed with the functioning. You can do one thing you can call up the Blum helpline and take assistance from them, also you can show them you requirements they do come to the location and will guide you in selecting the best product. They also guide the carpenter in case they need help. For auto hinges I used blum and its been an year they are working fine.

  32. Hi Manish,
We are planning a modular kitchen and wardrobes for our new home. We were so confused about Hafele or hettich...checking out rates, wondering about the quality...we are not hung up on having the very best but yes definitely looking for a good quality and low maintenance option.

Your article was very detailed and gave us a very clear picture, and in fact helped us to finally go with hafele. I can relate to the tremendous effort made by you and the research done...I am seeing my husband losing sleep over the same too. We have also decided to go with a local carpenter but we know it would be more taxing instead of giving to a consultant per se. However this would also ensure quality as per our requirements and yes the cost would be lesser.

It would be a big help if in this process you could share your kitchen design and wardrobe inner-outer designs. If it is okay with you kindly share the same on jayaswalrashi@gmail.com

    Thanks in anticipation

    1. Hello,
There is very little difference between a PVC and Acrylic laminate, some seller terms the same laminate as Acrylic and some term its as PVC. For kitchen I preferred a PVC laminate with gloss and scratch resistance as the are is of high and rough use. We also get a lot of options in color and variety in the same. Also they are water resistant hence by increasing the life of the furniture by some years.

For a 8.5 feet long wardrobe you have to go for three doors and maximum plywood breath is 4 feet so this leaves us with just 8 feet, if you can reduce the size to 8 feet then two door sliding door would look much neater and bigger and easy maintenance.

  48. Hi Manish - Thank you! I have been trying to talk to different folks to understand the effort involved. I am learning and your blog is very definitive. Thank you for taking time to put this together. I would like to see if you could share your kitchen/wardrobe pics to have an understanding. I have been talking for few weeks with all big names and I am not satisfied with what they share as the design and the pics. Reading your blog is motivating me to execute by ourselves. I am sure, this is an umpteenth time to receive a request to share the pics. May be, I am thinking, you could post it here on the blog so that we do not bother you much. We reach out to you for very specific questions then. :) If you could help me out. Please email to prasanna_k@hotmail.com.

  49. Hi Manish,

Can the Blum fittings be installed on carpenter made drawers? I was under the impression that the Blum fittings can only be installed on Tandem boxes/blum drawers. Also where do I get the blum fittings for carpenter made drawers? in Blum dealers? Please clarify. Also since it is carpenter made, do we need to use telescopic channel for drawer slides?
Sorry for too many questions as Iam a newbee
    Thanks
    Senthil

  50. Hello Senthil,

The Blum fitting can be installed on carpenter made draws the tandem boxes needs a base which has to be prepared by the carpenter. Blum wil provide you with channels and the side accessories in various forms as per your selection (SS finish, Powder quoted finish etc..) you need to make the base of plywood and ask your carpenter to fit it.

Its advisable to just visit a near by hafele store with your carpenter he would get a clear idea of how to do.

Do question the supplier in case you do not understand any fittings they will assist you or send technician at your site.

If you are buying Blum fitting then the set contains the channels, you do not have to buy separate telescopic channel for it.

If you are using the steel trolley model then blum fitting wont fit in that you just can manage with Hafele telescopic channels along with the steel trolley.

Hope I have answered all your query.

    Thanks and Regards,

    1. Hi, to be frank, Godrej fitting I am not aware of. I did not come across any of their major fitting in my journey towards building my house interior.

Yes you can go for one brand of fitting for whole house this will make your wastage less and carpenter works easier. I used Blum SS basket which I must specify is terrific till date.

  56. Hi Manish,
Thank you for taking the time to put down all the information and answering all the queries

I have mostly done my research around hettich and grass. Blum looks very promising after reading your article. I will look more into it.

    I have a few questions
    1. I have a 3 ft x 1 ft drawers would you suggest a tandem or high end channels (called quadro in hettich, not sure if what its equivalent or better one is in Blum)
    2. I have drawers of similar size on the floor (in the place of skirting). Is the wheel kit you mention in the article for such drawers?
    3. I have been trying to find comprehensive data of different channels/tandem vs max weight vs max width for optimal performance of the drawers. Have you come across any such resource on the net?
    4. I have finalised my design still would love to see your designs. Im sure there would be many things i can use from it. Could you please mail them to madhura.bindu@gmail.com

    Thanks again for your efforts

    1. Hello Madhura,
      Thanks for you appreciation.

To begin with I ll answer your query question wise:
      1) It depends where the drawer is, if it is in the kitchen or wardobe. If in kitchen then you can go for blum, but if in Wardrobe you can use hafele or Quadro of hettich, just make sure you pick the right kgs channel so that it can take the weight. To tell you a interesting fact I used a Ebco Indian channel for a drawer which is 1feet in height and 12 feet in width to place my aluminum ladder in it and its working fine.

2)No no the wheel kit is for the wardrobe channel. For floor drawer we can use small size 6-8 wheel kit which functions smooth and doesn't not leave a impact on the flooring. There is no famous brand in this but we have to hunt for the same in local market of whole sale hardware.

      3) The hafele store gave me their calculation when I mentioned my details to them. They have it in their system.
      4) The images are in the blog itself.

      Thanks and regards

  57. Hi Manish..I have decided on Blum hardware for my kitchen. I wanted know what is better between powder coated and SS. Also, do you have any idea about Raumplus brand acrylic laminate? My interiors consultant suggested it saying it is German imported and good. It would be great if you can suggest any good brands for acrylic laminate in the kitchen. Between Blum Aventos lift up and other single lift up I am not able to decide..any suggestions here also appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, I had installed the Blum SS finish as It will give an increased life span over the other two. If you have budget constraints you can go with the powder coated which is also fine. But if budget is not an issue the SS finish looks neat and gives a premium feel. About the brand in Acrylic laminate I do not have any idea about Raumplus, but I had used Berga which has a korean feel and could be rebuffed. There are a lot of brands in this you can have a check at retail stores before buying. Also please check the cost it varies hugely from location to location. For example I was quoted Rs 3500/sheet in Bangalore and same sheet of same brand I got from Mumbai at Rs 1500/-.

Aventos lift up is good do check the weight to size ratio. I had initially bought a higher capacity one which made the door shoot up quickly.

  58. Hi Manish,

Firstly, I must say, you are a man of patience and nerve of steel.
You have responded to each and every query to the satisfaction of all. Really liked your blog!

In the same anticipation, I am writing my journey so far and my queries where you can advise basis your experience so far...

    1. I am constructing residential house with 3 floors having 2 kitchen. Both have approx sizes of 180-200 sq ft.
    2. I have been researching Delhi/NCR area for modular kitchen manufacturers.
    3. Most have almost same options, laminate/membrane/acrylic/PU or glass finish for shutters. Plywood for carcass. Fittings of Hettich or Inox.
    4. Recently, found 2 more options for shutter, one as Niemann board from Germany (high gloss front side, lam on other side, its totally scratch resistant, tested myself but quite expensive) and second is Alvic board from Spain (high gloss from front side and same color matt on back side, its also scratch resistant but the glossyness is not that good in comparison to acrylic board of mdf or Niemann).

Now, my queries are as below:

    1. which material should I use for carcass given the fear of termite in Delhi region. as of now, I have shortlisted action tesa HDHMR 16 mm board. back side of carcass will have tiles as protection. I have other option of going with Century BWP grade board for carcass. please suggest.

    2. One of my known dealer of Hafele/Blum/Hettich suggested me to try and look at the TITUS hardware fittings for kitchen. TITUS is from Slvoania and I physically tested their tandem fitting today and found it appealing. Their TITUS HYDRAULIC DAMPER is patented technology which they claim to be best in industry. So, the question is, is TITUS better than BLUM/Hafele...by the way, this is cheaper than Hettich by 30-40% on net value after discount.

    3. which material should I use for Shutter -> Niemann (it's approx 600/- psft OR Alvic (it's approx 400/- psft) OR Ornare Acrylic high gloss lam boards (it's approx 300/- psft)

    4. If hardware to be used is BLUM, then which hardware should be of BLUM? like bi-fold, tandem drawer etc.?

    5. which hardware should I use of Hafele, if recommendation is Hafele...?

my list of hardware is as follows:

Magic Corner 1 4 SQUARE MAGIC CORNER BLUM
    Rolling Shutter 1 ALUMINIUM REHAU
Drawers 12 QUADRO WITH WHITE RODS BLUM
Bottle Pull Out 1 STEEL BLUM
    Cutlery Tray 1 PVC IMPORTED
Grain Trolley 1 QUADRO WITH WHITE RODS BLUM
Tall Unit Drawers 4 QUADRO WITH GLASS FRONT BLUM
    Wicker Bastet 1 IMPORTED
    GTPT 1 SS 304 IMPORTED
    Bi-Folds Lift Up 2 BLUM

Hope you are not irritated by the length of my question and comment but looking at your past record, I am hopeful, you would help me arrive at right decisions.

    1. Thanks for the appreciation. The list is long :), but would love to answer them all. That was the reason why I wrote this blog to help as much as I can. So here it is:

      1) Cover up the base with tiles and also the back side of the board with a cheap laminate this though would not be seen but would reduce the chances of termites to the minimum. The more you wrap the back and sides of plywood with laminate the chances of termites reduce. I think you can go with Century BWP 710+ Marine Grade Plywood. It is solid and effective but may increase the budget. Given the query and brands you mentioned I assume that budget is not a constrain for you. So we ll keep that aside for my next answers.

      2) Titus I have a very fair bit of Idea regarding this brand. Also i feel they do not have as much number of solution as Hafele or Hettich has. Secondly the support team plays an important role if they have a good support team it would be easy for you and the carpenters life. I would prefer to go for single brand like Titus or Hafele or Blum. This reduces the wastage and also easier for carpenter to understand the fitting and install. I am now using blum in kitchen since a year and half and must say its working the same as it did the first day.

      3) If budget is no issue then Niemann looks beautiful.
But I personally feel its very costly. You can use a good quality Veneer (say 400/sqft) and get a Poly coat on it (Say 300/sqft) this would give you the best finish. Or you can simply use polycoat with single color on plain plywood that would just cost you 400-450/ sqft. The rate of polycoat start with 300/sqft but with lower quality the one I coated you is using ICA Chemical Italy. I ll upload a picture of same in the blog you can see the finish over veneer you can have a check.

      4) Hardware of blum you can use the Tandem box then Aventos bi fold lift up.

      5) Hafele has only drawer channel rest you will have to use Blum if selecting between these two brands.
The list of hardware looks great I am also using the Rehau its beautiful and smooth. instead of glass you can have a look at the SS finish it will increase the life.
Personally I found the Blum Kitchen drawer Cutlery Tray to be very expensive, So I asked my carpenter to use the Merino hanex board and cut them into the sizes I wanted and made partition. Its serving the purpose I must say.

Hope I have met with all your query. The views shared by me can be used for decision making but at the end go with what you feel is perfect.

      Regards

The images have been uploaded along with this blog please have a check. For blum fitting we just need to make a basic
drawer box without the sides. Once you take your carpenter to any of the distributors or the main display store located near to Langford Road, Shanthi Nagar Bangalore. Its very simple dont worry regarding that.

    2. Hello,

      Thanks.

When you take a bending PVC laminate just bend it on both side so you wont get the edge. As on the top you will have the handle and bottom would not mind you. So just bend it on both the sides. This will increase the grip also as chances of the band coming out are high if adhesive is not used properly. So continue with the laminate.

    Hi manish
    Thank you for the Artical.
I am getting my modular kitchen done. My carpenter is suggesting peglar brand for hardware and for corner unit. Do you know anything about peglar brand? Am planning for tandum box, so which company box and corner unit will you suggest? Which brand is good for cutler unit and detergent holder?

    1. Hi Poornima

      Apologies for late reply.

I am sorry but I have not heard about the brand Peglar. Request you to have a look at their fittings to have a feel at any of their demo work and the price of the same.

If there is not much difference you can go for Hafele any day.

For tandem box the quality of Hafele is much more superior than its other competitors. As I have personally used it so I can say no issues so far. Though I faced some issue with Hafele Channels soft close ones but those were small issues and could be a problem due to uneven carpentry work which was rectified soon without much effort.

For detergent holder you can try Hettich.

With regards to HOB I have burnt my hands once when I went will Elica.

Must say the hob was a disaster. The flames at times reached 2-3 feet in height when going high from low or switching off, despite regular complaints by me it was not solved. I had to change it. Currently I am using Faber and its working good so far. The new designer series by them gives good look and specifically made for Indian cooking style.

Laminates you can go with any good quality above 1mm.
      Buy the ones you like.

I just came across your Blog.It is very useful and informative. I am in the process of planning the interiors for our Apartment in Bangalore. I had a question regarding wardrobes. I am planning for sliding wardrobes. However I am bit confused on the selection of sliding door hardware. I know that ARISTO is very good. I have checked them out personally and the products are really excellent. However they are very expensive. Wanted to know if you have any experience or opinion about Wardrobe sliding door hardware/mechanism of Hettich or Hafele. I have come across few negative comments by users about Hettich/Hafele Wardrobe sliding door hardware. The feedback seems that beyond 1-2 years of use the mechanisms start to give problem and therefore they had to switch to ARISTO.
